Outsourced Bookkeeping Allows You to Focus on the Bigger Picture

outsourced bookkeepingWhether you’re beginning a brand-new business or looking for new ways to grow an existing company, there’s an easy initial step you can take to initiate growth: outsourced bookkeeping. Outsourcing is a powerful way to take back-office details off your plate and allow you to focus on your bigger vision for your company. If you can’t find an hour in your day to plan for the future of your company, you need to outsource.

Outsourced bookkeeping comes with a few considerations, however. Here are some factors to keep in mind as you make the transition to turn over your books to a specialist:

Find the right partner. If you network with other business owners, ask them for the name of a good bookkeeper. This is a good place to start, but you need a few more steps, too, to make sure that a bookkeeper is the right fit for your business. For instance, not only should they be able to work in your software system and understand the basic functions of what you need, but they should also be able to clearly communicate with you and be able to explain the ways they’ve recorded your transactions.

Determine whether there is more expertise to be gained. Many bookkeepers either work for an accountant or they are an accountant working on bookkeeping tasks. It may be beneficial to find outsourced bookkeeping that allows you to scale up in services as your company grows. Right now you may only need payroll handled, but as you grow, you are going to need the insight and expertise of an accountant to help you make informed decisions and create more complex financial reports.

Consider where you get your best cost versus benefit. Outsourcing is a great way to free up your time to plan for your company, but there is going to be a right mix of hiring out your tasks and handling things in-house. It’s a good idea to talk with your bookkeeper about the possibility of starting slowly and building up how much you are outsourcing as you grow. Many companies start with payroll and expand from there. Before long, you will appreciate the order and reliability of a bookkeeper and you may want to develop a plan for eventually outsourcing all of your accounting needs.

Keep expectations clearly stated. It’s a good idea to draw up a contract to clearly state the expectations and what has been agreed upon by both parties. Having clear communication about what’s included in your outsourced accounting sets a precedent for a professional relationship where both parties are receiving what they need and it is mutually beneficial.
